Loyalty on your lapel

Sun Mar 23, 2008 at 12:34:03 PM PDT

The rightwing keeps putting a great emphasis on the fact that Senator Barack Obama does not wear a lapel pin of an American flag.

He's explained his reasoning well.

While I don't want to become a rightwinger and make too large of an issue over what is in essense a piece of decoration, I think it's rather telling what U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd, the incredibly prescient and wise figure who tried nearly singlehandedly to stop the rush to war, and his former senior aide, Anne Barth, who is running for House of Representatives in WV-02, wear on their lapels.

See what's on their lapels? I asked a while back after I first noticed it on a photo of Anne Barth. It's a lapel pin representing the U.S. Constitution.

While some on the right - and even the left - like to wrap themselves in the U.S. flag, Byrd and Barth are loyal to the U.S. Constitution.

While as some of you know I've had my differences with Senator Byrd on different votes, I've always respected and appreciated that he has been one of the most ardent defenders of the Constitution in Congress. He has been one of the staunchest opponents to Bush's imperial presidency.

Here is what Byrd says of Barth:

"Anne will always be an aggressive, irrepressible force for the people of West Virginia. She is a bright, bright light and she will electrify and inspire her colleagues in Washington on both sides of the aisle. I am very happy that the people of the Second District have an opportunity to put her considerable skills and talents to work for them. She shares the values of working West Virginians."

We need more and better Democrats in the House of Representatives. Anne Barth is one of those Democrats we want there.
